The ASUS TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI is an ATX motherboard for the AMD AM5 socket, built around the B850 chipset. It belongs to ASUS's TUF Gaming line, the durability-oriented family positioned below the ROG range, and it combines current-generation features such as Wi-Fi 7 and a PCI Express 5.0 graphics slot with a mainstream-tier chipset. This page collects the specification ASUS publishes on its tech-spec page, explains what each entry means for a build and omits anything ASUS does not state, including a price. There are no benchmarks or tests here, only manufacturer data.
Processor and chipset support
The socket is AMD AM5, and ASUS lists support for AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors, with a pointer to the ASUS download center for the definitive CPU support list. The chipset is the AMD B850. Several of the board's PCI Express and storage features are written per processor family, which is an important detail: what a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 chip gets is not identical to what a Ryzen 8000 chip gets, as the expansion and storage sections below show. Our guide to motherboard chipset tiers explains where B850 sits relative to the other AM5 chipsets, and a processor for this socket in our database is the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
Memory
There are four DIMM slots supporting up to 256 GB of DDR5 in a dual-channel architecture. ASUS lists speeds up to 8000 MT/s and beyond as overclocked (OC) operation with Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series processors, and both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs are supported. The board supports AMD EXPO memory profiles and the ASUS Enhanced Memory Profile (AEMP). ASUS adds two caveats: adjustments are made based on the specifications of mass-produced memory available on the market, and the supported memory types, speeds and module counts depend on the CPU and configuration. As with most boards, using all four slots tends to lower the speed a processor can sustain. If you are unsure how the profile names differ between Intel and AMD, our explainer on XMP versus EXPO memory profiles covers it.
Graphics output
Video output is through one DisplayPort and one HDMI port, driven by the processor's integrated graphics. ASUS states that the DisplayPort supports a maximum of 8K at 30 Hz as specified in DisplayPort 1.4 and that HDMI supports 4K at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1, and notes that the graphics specification varies between CPU types. A gaming build would usually take its display connections from a graphics card instead.
Expansion slots
With Ryzen 9000 and 7000 Series processors the board offers one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot running in x16 mode. With Ryzen 8000 Series processors that slot runs as PCIe 4.0 x16, supporting x8 or x4 modes depending on the processor. The B850 chipset adds one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot running in x4 mode and two PCIe 4.0 x1 slots. ASUS warns that the chipset-connected x16 slot shares bandwidth with M.2_3: the slot is disabled when M.2_3 is in use. That is a general pattern on modern boards, and our article on PCIe lane sharing between graphics cards and NVMe drives explains why it happens. ASUS also points to a PCIe bifurcation table on its support site.
Storage
The board supports three M.2 slots and four SATA 6 Gb/s ports. M.2_1 is a Key M slot for 2280 drives, running PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 9000 and 7000 Series processors and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000. M.2_2 accepts 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 drives at PCIe 4.0 x4 (x4 or x2 with Ryzen 8000). M.2_3 is chipset-connected, takes 2280 drives and runs PCIe 4.0 x4. AMD RAIDXpert2 supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 with Ryzen 9000, RAID 0 and 1 with Ryzen 8000 and RAID 0, 1 and 10 with Ryzen 7000. In practice the PCIe 5.0 slot is the one for the fastest current drive, while the other two serve Gen 4 drives. Our guide to NVMe Gen 4 versus Gen 5 helps decide whether Gen 5 is worth paying for.
Networking
Wired networking is a Realtek 2.5 Gb Ethernet port with TUF LANGuard protection. Wireless is a 2x2 Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) module supporting the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands with 160 MHz channels and up to 2.9 Gbps, along with Bluetooth 5.4. ASUS is explicit about limits: features vary by operating system, Wi-Fi 7 needs Windows 11 24H2 or later for full function, and earlier Windows 11 releases only support Wi-Fi 6E. The 6 GHz band and bandwidth are also subject to national regulation, and the Bluetooth version depends on the module maker. Background on the standards is in our article on Wi-Fi 6E versus Wi-Fi 7 on motherboards.
USB, audio and rear panel
The rear panel provides ten USB ports: one USB 20 Gbps Type-C, three USB 10 Gbps Type-A, four USB 5 Gbps Type-A and two USB 2.0 Type-A. Internally there are seven more: one 10 Gbps connector supporting Type-C, one 5 Gbps header for two more ports and two USB 2.0 headers for four more. ASUS gives the Type-C power delivery output as a maximum of 5 V at 3 A. Audio is a Realtek ALC1220P 7.1 Surround Sound codec with an internal amplifier, impedance sensing for front and rear headphone outputs, 120 dB signal-to-noise for stereo playback and 113 dB for line-in recording, and playback up to 32-bit and 192 kHz. ASUS notes that HDA bandwidth limits mean 32-bit and 192 kHz is not available for 7.1 output. The rear panel also has five audio jacks, the Wi-Fi antenna connection and a BIOS FlashBack button.
Power, headers and protection
Power comes from a 24-pin main connector and two 8-pin 12 V CPU connectors. Cooling headers are one CPU fan, one CPU OPT fan, one AIO pump and four chassis fans. Other headers include three addressable Gen 2 headers, clear CMOS, chassis intrusion, a COM port, front-panel audio, the front system panel header and a Thunderbolt (USB4) header. The TUF Protection set comprises a digital VRM power design with DrMOS, ESD Guards, TUF LANGuard, overvoltage protection, SafeSlot and a stainless-steel back I/O, and the thermal solution includes an M.2 heatsink and a VRM heatsink. For background on why VRM design matters, see our explanation of motherboard VRM quality.
Q-Design, BIOS and software
ASUS lists Q-Design conveniences including the M.2 Q-Latch, PCIe Slot Q-Release, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-DIMM and Q-Slot, and a Q-LED that reports CPU in red, DRAM in yellow, VGA in white and boot device in yellow-green. The EZ DIY set includes a BIOS FlashBack button and LED, a pre-mounted I/O shield and SafeDIMM. BIOS FlashBack lets a firmware file be flashed from a USB drive without a processor installed, a feature covered in our guide to BIOS and UEFI FlashBack. Software includes Armoury Crate with Aura Creator, Aura Sync, Fan Xpert 4 and power saving, DriverHub, GlideX, TurboV Core, TUF GAMING CPU-Z, DTS Audio Processing, a trial of Norton 360 for Gamers and a trial of WinRAR. The UEFI BIOS is on a 256 Mb flash ROM with CrashFree BIOS 3, EZ Flash 3, EZ Mode and MyHotkey.
Size and box contents
The board is ATX at 12 by 9.6 inches (30.5 by 24.4 cm) and lists Windows 11 as its operating system. The box includes two SATA cables, the WiFi Q-Antenna, a TUF GAMING sticker, two M.2 rubber packages and a quick start guide.
